With a list of celebrity followers ranging from Tyra Banks and Brooke Shields to Julia Roberts and Iman, Djoniba Dance Centre founder Djoniba Mouflet is recognized as one of the country’s top African dance instructors. Raised in Senegal, Djoniba’s talent for dance earned him prestige across West Africa and a coveted spot in the Dance Theatre of Harlem. In 1992, he opened Djoniba Dance Centre, fulfilling city-dwellers’ desire for dance, diversity, and community.
At this eclectic Union Square dance studio, students are taught as equals, with instructors providing technical guidance while encouraging everyone to express the joy of movement in their own way. By the time each class is over, an intoxicating atmosphere has taken hold of the room. Students dance with abandon to the beat of live drums, pounding out frustrations through their feet or building up hope with a wave of their arms.
